Blue Light Card Foundation is funding a programme of golf skills development events for wounded veterans.

Sectors supported: Veterans

On Course Foundation is the UK’s only golf specific military charity, using golf as a vehicle for the successful recovery of wounded veterans. Golf occupies a unique position as one of the few sports where participants of all skills and physical abilities can play together on a level playing field, owing to the official handicap system. It offers injured service personnel not only a sporting challenge, but for those leaving service, an array of attractive career opportunities.

The benefits of playing golf offer a key part in physical rehabilitation, improving both balance and limb coordination. Camaraderie, competitive spirit and concentration are important too, supporting the psychological recovery of beneficiaries and helping them find confidence within themselves.

Many service personnel face the daunting challenge of finding employment after leaving the services, something On Course Foundation hopes to help them overcome.

They currently deliver 18 core residential golf skills and employment courses throughout England and Wales each year, however, increased demand for the service and subsequent over-subscription of attendees over the last couple of years has encouraged the development of this additional programme.

Will Barker, head of fundraising for On Course Foundation said, “We are delighted to have received funding from the Blue Light Card Foundation to support a programme of confidence building golf skills development events in England and Wales over the next 12 months. These events are an extension of our core residential courses and will give wounded veterans the opportunity to access our programme. This will continue to assist with their rehabilitation and transition to civilian life. Thank you for your fantastic support.”
