Nature and Water-Based Wellbeing Fund

This Fund exists to commission and support evidence-informed nature and water-based programmes that improve the mental wellbeing, recovery and resilience of people working across the emergency services, NHS, armed forces and allied voluntary response roles.

The Fund focuses on prevention, early intervention and recovery, alongside (but not instead of) clinical care.

To be considered, programmes must meet all core requirements below.

Nature or water-based activity as a core mechanism

  • Green or blue space must be central to the intervention, not an optional add-on
  • Activities should make purposeful use of the environment (e.g. woodland, coast, rivers, gardens)
  • Examples include (but are not limited to):
  • Woodland or outdoor wellbeing programmes
  • Walking, sporting activity, gardening
  • Sailing, angling, surfing, sporting activity or other water-based interventions

Structured and facilitated delivery

  • Activities must be planned, and facilitated, not informal recreation
  • Programmes should have a clear start point, journey and intended outcomes
  • Facilitation should be appropriate to the setting and participant needs

Trauma-aware and psychologically safe

  • Programmes must demonstrate understanding of trauma and stress
  • Staff and facilitators should be trained or experienced in trauma-aware practice
  • Psychological safety, consent and choice must be embedded throughout delivery

Social connection and peer support

  • Programmes should intentionally support connection, belonging and shared experience
  • Group-based activity is strongly encouraged where appropriate

Accessibility and acceptability

  • Programmes should be accessible to people who may not engage with clinical or workplace-based support
  • Consideration should be given to shift patterns, fatigue, stigma and practical barriers

We are unlikely to fund programmes that:

  • Use outdoor or nature settings only incidentally or for venue convenience
  • Are purely recreational with no wellbeing intent or facilitation
  • Focus solely on clinical therapy without a clear nature or water-based component
  • Duplicate existing provision without clear added value
  • Are mandatory in nature

Applicants should clearly articulate how their programme contributes to the following outcomes.

 Short to medium-term outcomes

  • Improved mental wellbeing and stress management
  • Increased confidence, resilience and coping capacity
  • Reduced isolation, emotional exhaustion or burnout
  • Stronger peer connection and sense of belonging

Longer-term contribution

  • Sustained wellbeing and recovery
  • Improved engagement with healthy routines and support
  • Contribution to retention and reduced sickness absence (where relevant)
  • Healthier cultures around recovery and wellbeing

We expect proportionate but meaningful learning.

Applicants should:

  • Reference evidence, learning or lived experience informing their approach
  • Identify how outcomes will be monitored (quantitative and/or qualitative)
  • Commit to sharing learning with the Foundation

We particularly welcome:

  • Programmes willing to contribute to the wider evidence base for frontline wellbeing
  • Use of validated wellbeing measures where appropriate

Funded programmes must:

  • Be inclusive and accessible to people from different backgrounds and roles
  • Actively consider barriers related to gender, race, disability or service culture
  • Have robust safeguarding, health and safety and risk management processes
  • Demonstrate appropriate insurance and duty of care for outdoor and water-based activity
