Emergency Services Day: Celebrating Those Who Care for Us
By Emma Woods-Bolger, CEO, Blue Light Card Foundation
Today marks Emergency Services Day also known as #999day as moment to pause, reflect, and show gratitude for those who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe: police, fire, ambulance, NHS, search and rescue, and many others.
But behind every siren and uniform is a human being.
A mother, a father, a partner, a friend.
And while they run towards danger, the impact of what they see, hear, and carry home often lingers long after the incident ends.
That’s why the Blue Light Card Foundation exists.
Our programmes are designed to reach every part of the emergency services, from the call handler who picks up the phone, the crews who arrive on scene, and the clinicians who provide care long after the incident.
Our delivery programmes are as varied as the challenges faced by blue light workers: therapy and trauma dogs, clinical interventions, resilience-building programmes, and workplace grants. All designed to make sure no one faces the impact of service alone.
We’re proud to have supported over 36 programmes across the UK, reaching frontline teams where it matters most. We also host Blue Light Together, a trusted wellbeing resource hub for anyone in the emergency services community.
This year, we launched our very first Workplace Wellbeing Fund, recognising that small changes can have a big impact. Whether it’s refreshing a staff room, funding yoga or mindfulness sessions, or simply stocking a snack drawer, we’re committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen day-to-day wellbeing.
As part of this fund, the next stage is about to begin.

On Emergency Services Day, it’s vital not only to thank those who look after us, but also to acknowledge their ongoing need for support.
Because caring for the people who care for us is not optional, it’s essential.
