Our Funding Approach

Blue Light Card Foundation is evolving its funding priorities to ensure we deliver the greatest possible impact for Blue Light communities.

We now award funding through an invite-only application process. This allows us to take a more strategic approach, working closely with selected partners to support high-quality, evidence-informed programmes that align with our charitable objectives.

At present, our funding is focused on nature-based wellbeing interventions, particularly those using green and blue spaces to support the mental health, resilience and recovery of Blue Light personnel.

The Blue Light community including current and retired staff, as well as volunteers face high exposure to trauma, chronic stress and burnout. While traditional mental health services remain essential, there is growing evidence that structured engagement with natural environments can deliver measurable psychological benefits.

Nature-based approaches offer:

  • Low-cost, scalable and inclusive support
  • Both preventative and recovery pathways
  • Alternatives for individuals who may be hesitant to engage with clinical services

The Foundation has a strong track record of supporting integrated therapeutic programmes that combine nature-based activity with clinical and physical wellbeing support. These initiatives are popular, well-received, and demonstrably beneficial to wellbeing, resilience and social reconnection.

By prioritising green and blue space programmes, including those delivered alongside recognised clinical and physical wellbeing interventions, we aim to continue delivering high-impact, cost-effective support that meets the evolving mental health needs of the Blue Light community.

Successful applications typically demonstrate:

  • Clear objectives and outcomes linked to mental health and wellbeing

To ensure programmes are effective and accountable, applicants must:

  1. Track and demonstrate measurable change in beneficiaries’ mental health and wellbeing
  2. Use a recognised impact measurement tool where available; if none exists, use the Edinburgh Warwick Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS)
  3. Capture and share case studies of beneficiaries’ journeys that clearly illustrate programme impact, highlighting personal growth, improved wellbeing, and outcomes
