Helping Lifeboat Crews Heal After Tragedy.
The Blue Light Card Foundation supported a mental health training programme to enhance wellbeing and resilience among volunteer lifeboat crew members based at a coastal rescue station.
As part of the project, team members completed Mental Health First Aid training, while others undertook REACT MH awareness training, equipping them with practical tools to recognise and respond to signs of mental distress among their teammates. Additionally, they completed a Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) practitioner course, enabling the team to provide structured peer support following critical incidents.
This customised training addressed a rising need. In 2022 alone, the use of trauma support services at lifeboat stations increased by 150%, emphasising the urgent need to invest in mental health in high-risk, volunteer-led environments.
By embedding this knowledge at crew level, the station now has a stronger foundation for early intervention, peer-to-peer support, and open conversations about mental health. The project demonstrates how targeted training can build a lasting culture of care and help protect the emotional wellbeing of those who serve others, often in the most challenging conditions.
