The Blue Light Card Foundation supported the creation and operation of a dedicated crisis line for members of the UK Fire and Rescue Service. Managed by an experienced, specialist team, the line provides immediate, confidential emotional support to firefighters experiencing crisis, trauma, or distress.
In total, 135 individuals were directly supported during the first 8 months of the crisis line’s operation. Based on national research, which shows that one suicide can affect up to 135 people, this intervention may have positively influenced the wellbeing of over 18,000 individuals, including family members, friends, and colleagues.
The impact of the crisis line extended beyond individual cases. It opened the door for more open conversations about mental health and suicide within the Fire Service, breaking long-held stigma and increasing engagement with broader wellbeing services.
The initiative not only supported the creation of a vital service but also contributed to a cultural change, where reaching out is encouraged and seeking help is regarded as a strength.
