Celebrating International Dogs Day

Oscar Kilo Team

This International Dog Day, we were delighted to welcome Oscar Kilo UK and their wellbeing dogs to Blue Light Card HQ. The visit was more than just a celebration of our four-legged friends, it was a great reminder of the difference they make to the mental health and wellbeing of those working in the most demanding frontline roles.

The OK9 wellbeing and trauma support dog network has already trained 39 dogs and handlers. Together, they provide invaluable wellbeing and trauma assistance across police, fire, and ambulance communities, helping those who face some of the most challenging situations imaginable. Whether it’s a quiet moment of comfort after a traumatic incident or ongoing support in the workplace, these dogs offer something unique that traditional support systems often cannot, an immediate sense of calm, connection, and reassurance.

During their visit, we had the pleasure of meeting Poppy, Oakley, and Dill, three of the wonderful canine members of the OK9 team. Their calm presence filled the room instantly, creating smiles, conversations, and a tangible sense of positivity. It was an important reminder that wellbeing support comes in many forms, and that small moments of connection can have a lasting impact.

At the Blue Light Card Foundation, we are proud to help make initiatives like this possible. Supporting projects that prioritise the mental health of the blue light community is central to our mission. By standing behind organisations such as Oscar Kilo UK, we can ensure that those who dedicate their lives to protecting us receive the support, tools, and care they need to thrive at work and beyond.

On International Dog Day, and every day, we celebrate not only the vital role of animals like Poppy, Oakley, and Dill but also the incredible people who work alongside them. Together, they remind us that mental wellbeing is not a luxury, it’s essential.
